Islamic e-reader based on Windows CE

Enmac Engineering Limited has announced what it says is the first Islamic e-reader and PMP (personal media player). The "E-Alim EL1000" runs Windows CE 5.0, has a seven-inch touchscreen display, includes stereo speakers, and has a microSD expansion slot, according to the company.

Hong Kong-based Enmac has put the E-Alim EL1000 on sale in the United Arab Emirates, and reportedly hopes to sell around 10,000 units in the Gulf this year. The device, whose name translates as "the electronic scholar," is supplied with an external analog compass so that users can oriented themselves properly for purposes of prayer, the company says.

According to Enmac, the EL1000 is designed to display the Qur'an on its screen in one of six different Arabic fonts. In addition, the device can recite any of the Qur'an in the voice of one of six famous Sheikhs, the company adds.

Enmac says the EL1000 can translate the Qur'an into 24 different languages: Albanian, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hausa, Indonesian, Italian, Latin, Malaysian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Transliteration, Turkish, and Urdu. The device also contains Tafseer (Qur'anic commentaries) by a variety of commentators, Hadith (information about Muhammad's way of life), prayer times, and other religious materials, the company says.

The EL1000, whose main menu is pictured above, may also be used for some secular purposes, including displaying photos, viewing movies, and viewing e-books, according to the company. No information on supported file formats was provided even in the device's manual, however.

The EL1000 features a seven-inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution, running Windows CE 5.0 on an unspecified, 400MHz Samsung processor. The battery-operable device has 64MB of RAM plus a microSD expansion slot, and comes bundled with a 2GB microSD card, says Enmac.
